'Pharming threat' to Indian PCs
Computer users in India have been warned about an online security threat to their PCs, namely pharming.
This refers to hackers redirecting web traffic to fraudulent sites which look the same as a trusted resource, meaning consumers mistakenly enter sensitive information such as card details, the Rediff News reports.
Such websites capture and steal users' details in order to commit identity theft, it notes.
Divya Bansal, associate coordinator of the Cyber Security Research Centre, told the publication that this is a new threat to people's online security.
"Pharming attack is a new security threat for the internet users, which is developing in the country and it is primarily launched by the hackers on the websites for getting financial gains," she explained.
Recently there have been reports of hackers using cloned Facebook pages to entice users to give up their login information.
Hackers behind the scam email victims a phishing message purporting to be from a friend with the social networking website but then direct them to a misleading website and record their password and username.
