Peer-to-peer sharing 'presents risk'
US consumers who plan to share files with peers by joining their PC to an informal network should be aware of the risks, a publication has asserted.
An article published by the Internet Business Law Services (IBLS) has warned that although such networks can provide a "wealth of information", they are not always safe.
Users could mistakenly download copyrighted material, pornography or viruses and other malware, the web resource highlighted.
An additional risk is that the user accidentally shares information they do not mean to, it continued.
"Use a security program from a vendor you know and trust ... Some file-sharing software may install malware or adware and some files may include unwanted content," IBLS added.
It urged people to keep their security programs up-to-date to protect them from online threats.
Online resource SpywareInfo warns computer owners that if they receive pop-up adverts even when they have closed their browser, they could be infected with malware or spyware.
