Patches are vital for boosting online security
Most online security suites need the support of security patches in order to effectively protect consumers from online threats.
This conclusion was reached by Danish internet security firm Secunia, which tested the ability of a select number of Internet Security Suites to check their level of protection against malware and other exploits.
According to chief technology officer Thomas Kristensen, added to the fact that few users and companies patch their software, this means that many risk being attacked by cyber crooks.
He said: "Users and businesses need to take the threat seriously and realise that firewalls and traditional security software, such as that included in Internet Security Suites, isn't sufficient to protect PCs and corporate networks.
"What makes patching even more attractive is the fact that it is free-of-charge. It only costs the amount of time invested in downloading and installing the patch/update."
Computer giant Microsoft routinely issues patches on the second Tuesday of every month, an event that is now referred to as Patch Tueday.
