Online threats 'proliferating'
The number of online threats to which consumers become exposed whenever they venture on to the internet have been emphasised by one news provider in India.
Merinews.com identifies as many as 12 broad these categories of cybercrime being instigated by computer-savvy individuals with malicious intent across the globe.
While many of these may be familiar, such as computer viruses and hacking, others are less well known.
For instance, the provider describes "salami attacks" which could follow on from phishing attacks where an individual's details have been stolen.
The criminal makes very minor changes in a bid to escape detection, for instance creating balance transfers out of a bank account which are small enough to go unnoticed.
Over a period of time the sum stolen naturally builds - and large numbers of such attacks can result in significant gains for those involved.
Writing a paper on the subject, Michael Hale of All.net has previously commented that the nature and complexity of such attacks can avoid detection by even "the most attentive system accountants".
