Online threats on the rise with spam emails making 90 per cent
Around 90 per cent of all emails sent in the world are spam messages underlining the need to have proper and fully functional internet security software, an expert has said.
Computer networking company Cisco has issued a report stating that hackers are becoming ever more sophisticated and exploit social engineering opportunities with nearly 200 billion spam messages per day.
According to Cisco chief security researcher Patrick Peterson, the need to upgrade online security software and tighten endpoint security to minimise online threats is urgent.
"Every year we see threats evolve as criminals discover new ways to exploit people, networks and the internet," he said. "This year's trends underscore how important it is to look at all basic elements of security policies and technologies.
"Organisations can lower their risk of data loss by fine-tuning access controls and patching known vulnerabilities to eliminate the ability for criminals to exploit holes in infrastructures."
The US is the leading distributor of spam with a market share of 17.2 per cent followed by Turkey and Russia with 9.2 per cent and eight per cent respectively.
