Online threats 'hamper web-based voting'

Online security considerations are the main reason it is not yet possible to vote in government elections online, an expert has suggested.

Shane Greer, executive editor of Total Politics Magazine, said it is likely that within the next few years voters will attend the polling station and there use a computer to cast their vote.

However, he added that it is unlikely people will be voting from home PCs for a considerable time as the security risks of online threats are too great.

Mr Greer acknowledged that if it were possible to roll out online voting then it is likely that more people would choose to participate in elections.

He stated: "Certainly, it will encourage people if they can vote through their mobile phones [or] from their office.

"We would see a big increase in the amount of engagement through the increasing use of technology."

In 2005, just over 61 per cent of those eligible to vote participated in the general election, an increase from just over 59 per cent in 2001.
