Online threats 'damage viability of firms'
The online threat of cybercrime can damage the "very viability" of a firm, an expert has warned.
Scott Louis Weber, a partner in the law firm Patton Boggs and the former senior counsellor to the secretary of the US Department of Homeland Security, made his comments to the online news resource Forbes.
He warned that the sophistication of technology used by so many American companies means they are increasingly vulnerable to a virus attack which could have "devastating" consequences for a firm.
Mr Weber urged businesses to ensure their cyber security is up to date and that they are insured against computer security threats.
"Of all the hazards that are commonly discussed in public discourse - pandemic diseases, hurricanes, chemical and biological agent attacks - an attack on a company's cyber infrastructure is the most likely to occur," he added.
The Department of Justice urges PC users to treat online crime as they would any other and to report it to the relevant authorities.
