Online threat of bot attacks highlighted
Any internet-enabled computer is a potential target for a bot attack, users have been warned.
Online news resource KATU.com has urged computer owners to be wary of bot attacks, where a hacker seizes control of the machine and uses it to spread malware and spam.
It highlighted that many users may not be able to tell if their computer has been compromised.
Signs to watch for include the machine running more slowly than usual and an active hard drive even when the computer is not in use, the news source explained.
In order to protect themselves from such attacks, users should not visit websites they do not trust or use free file-sharing programmes, the publication urged.
KATU.com continued: "If you have virus scan software, keep it updated and if you don't have virus scan software, get it."
Last year, Lawrence Dietz, research director with analyst firm the Sageza Group, suggested to IT-Director.com that bots have become a "major threat" to current web users.
He predicted that financial motivations would ensure bot attacks continue to be a "significant" threat to online security in the near future.
