Online security focus must be re-examined, expert says
A call has been issued for more to be done by both the public and private sector in tackling online security problems in relation to data protection.
At a symposium in Washington DC, government agencies and private companies were urged to focus more on information based security.
The call was issued by security vendor Symantec, who said that encryption alone was not enough but "thoughtful" data classification and retention policies must be developed.
"Clearly we've moved to a point in time where our customers have to be much more focused on protecting the information itself, as opposed to protecting the PC or protecting the network," chairman and CEO John Thompson, said.
"While those are necessary components of a protection strategy, they're not the end all. More has to be done."
He highlighted the importance of organisations evaluating what information a computer held, of what importance it was and development of data classification and retention policies.
In the long run, this would make data management and recovery easier, he said
