Online security concerns noted

Australian computer users are concerned about online security, it has been stated.

Graham Ingram, general manager of advisory service the Australian Computer Emergency Response Team (AusCERT), tells the Data Security blog of the concerns noted by his organisation.

"People are clearly concerned about security," he asserts.

"But obviously we need to better target user awareness, particularly for those people who want to listen."

His comments follow research conducted by AusCERT to gauge the level of awareness of online security among the nation's computer users.

More than a tenth (11 per cent) of respondents admitted to never installing software updates such as operating system security patches.

And more than half (54 per cent) said that they leave their computer connected to the internet at all times, potentially risking an online security breach.

The organisation provides advice on computer security to individuals and higher education providers throughout Australia from its base at the University of Queensland.
