Online privacy fears among Brits
Consumer fears about online privacy are not being addressed, an expert has claimed.
Becky Hogge, executive director of Open Rights Group, made her comments following consumer concern over BT's use of internet tracking system Phorm.
The Foundation for Information Policy Research recently asserted that the system - which creates profiles of the keywords consumers use on websites in order to target marketing messages to them more specifically - is illegal.
Ms Hogge suggested that consumer rights to online privacy may not be being protected to the extent the law demands.
"I don't think the recent controversy has made people more aware - rather I think it has shown how aware people already are of their rights to privacy online," she added.
A major risk to people's online privacy and their safety from online threats is spyware, which rather than monitoring their online activities remotely, infects a computer and compromises its security.
