Online fraud 'hitting British wallets'

A new report has revealed that 40 per cent of people who use the web have fallen victim to some form of online fraud.

The CPP Group has conducted research which shows card fraud continues to be a serious concern for Britons, both on the high street and online.

Half of all such victims confessed they had been shocked at the ease with which they had fallen victim to identity theft, it reported.

Furthermore, a fifth of those whose identities were stolen said the experience had made them feel their privacy had been violated.

The CPP reported: "Fraud is most common over the internet where almost 40 per cent of people have fallen prey to fraudulent scams, with Sheffield being regionally the worst for this kind of activity."

A recent report by Apacs, the UK payments association, found that 15 million British people now use the internet to access their bank accounts and to shop.
