Online fraud 'causes identity theft'
Consumers should be aware of the various online frauds which can lead to identity theft, a website has warned.
An article published by News Factor has recommended that people are wary of clicking on links sent to them using unsolicited emails as these can often upload a virus to their PC or direct them to a website which infects the computer.
"Even if it claims to be a useful program, it might be a malicious application such as a keylogger, which can report back to crooks everything you type into your computer," the post continued.
Furthermore, consumers should not be tempted to download software from unknown websites, even if it is necessary in order to view a video, it added.
The US government's OnGuardOnline resource also recommends users exercise caution when browsing the web or opening emails.
It suggests that anyone who suspects they may have been infected by a malicious program immediately stops banking or shopping online and runs their current and up-to-date anti-virus software.
