Online firms fear fraud in Miami
Miami has overtaken New York as presenting the highest risk of online fraud, e-commerce entrepreneurs believe.
According to a survey commissioned by CyberSource Corporation, other cities considered by online merchants to have a high risk of fraud include Los Angeles and Chicago.
Nigeria was voted to be the riskiest country, receiving three times as many votes as runner-up Britain.
Doug Schwegman, CyberSource director of customer and market intelligence, said: "As always, we remind merchants that no one tool is a silver anti-fraud bullet [and] that combinations of tools work best to root out cybercrime."
Nigeria's high profile could be down to the "ubiquitous Nigerian scam letters", he added.
Earlier this year, reporter Melanie Payne commented in a News-Press article that she had received many phishing emails, usually purporting to be from a Nigerian politician and requesting her bank details.
She suggested that a worsening economy encourages such phishers and also makes it more likely recipients will fall for the scam.
