Online data theft threat for universities
Universities and colleges are at greater risk of online data theft than ever before, a new report has suggested.
Researchers James A Keller and Melissa Hill have published a paper addressing the risk of identity theft and data loss on campuses, Mondaq reports.
The study noted that the "dawn of the cyber age" has opened up many new prospects for obtaining, storing and sharing information but these developments present as many online threats as they do potential opportunities.
"Universities ... can now keep hundreds of thousands of constituent records in computerised systems. For these institutions, the threat of such information becoming compromised is very real," the report warned.
Recently, there have been a number of cases in the US of students being targeted with phishing emails - messages which purport to be from their university or undergraduate association but are actually trying to steal sensitive information from the recipient.
