Online consumers 'more security conscious'
UK consumers who shop online are highly security conscious when paying for good, according to a recent survey.
A survey by PayPoint.net has shown that 98 per cent of customers questioned said they do at least one security check when they are shopping online.
Over 90 per cent of respondents claimed to look at three or more of the website's internet security features, with the most popular checks being for a padlock icon in the browser or the presence of a UK contact address and phone number.
However, the survey also found that 69 per cent of internet users said they could be won over by a well-designed site, which indicates that fraudsters could catch shoppers off their guard by setting up a website that is easy to use and has clear payment instructions.
According to Apacs, the UK payments association, a quarter of online shoppers do not check whether a website is secure, while one in eight do not log out when they have been shopping online, leaving their details open to fraud.
