Online bankers urged to be cautious
People can take simple measures to protect themselves from online identity theft, an expert has commented.
Helen Lord, fraud and regulatory compliance director at Experian, asserted that identity fraud is one of the fastest-growing criminal activities of the century, adding that there are ways in which people can tackle the online threat.
She urged people to protect their sensitive information to ensure that thieves cannot access their bank details or fraudulently act under their name.
"Check your credit report for any significant changes that might be a result of someone having stolen your identity," Ms Lord urged.
Apacs, the UK payments association, recently published research which showed that fraud as a result of online banking had fallen, despite a sharp increase in the number of people using the web to bank and shop.
This is impressive, it noted, given the sharp rise in phishing incidents, which have nearly doubled from 14,000 in 2006 to almost 26,000 in 2007.
