'Ongoing threats' to online security
Computer security remains a "major issue" for the average computer user, an industry commentator has asserted.
Speaking through his blog on Australia's Sunshine Coast Daily website, Peter Daley reported that a hacker gang was recently discovered to be in control of 1.2 million home and small business computers.
He warned that the current online threats wasted consumer and company time and money.
People's personal information and financial transactions are being placed at risk, Mr Daley argued.
He suggested: "[The situation] also presents serious issues about national security. Imagine the national chaos caused by 1.2 million computers being shut down at once!"
The Australian High Tech Crime Centre urges home PC users who fear their machine may have been infected by malware to use anti-virus software to remove the problem programme.
People who believe they may have already been infected on purpose rather than because an acquaintance has a compromised machine should consider reporting the incident to state or territory police, it states.
