Novices 'confused by firewalls'
Many novice computer users are baffled by firewalls, an expert has asserted.
Technological expert Christopher Null made his comments in a Yahoo! blog, explaining that while it is fairly obvious what anti-virus and anti-spyware programs do, many people who are new to computers may be confused as to what a firewall does.
He explained that firewalls provide protection which stops malicious attacks getting through to a computer over the web.
Mr Null continued: "Thanks to the millions of zombie PCs in the wild, attack computers are constantly scanning the internet, almost at random, looking for unprotected computers to attack."
This means that even without opening infected files or downloading problem programs, malware is trying to get onto a machine, highlighting the security importance of a firewall.
A good firewall should protect the PC from malware such as Trojans, backdoors and keyloggers by monitoring what programs access the web from the machine or vice versa and blocking those which do not have adequate permission.
