New threat warning from US-Cert
Microsoft Excel documents harbouring malware are being distributed via email in a new threat, according to American experts.
The United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-Cert) warns that the malicious executables are present as "booby-traps" within the .xls files.
Filenames that have been established as associated with the trojans include OLYMPIC.XLS and SCHEDULE.XLS.
The US body is encouraging consumers to be cautious when opening email attachments, particularly those attached to unsolicited emails.
It also suggests blocking executable files at the email gateway and installing anti-virus software.
Such software can be beneficial in preventing attacks, although US-Cert stresses that it is important virus signature files be refreshed often.
US-Cert was created in 2003 by the Department for Homeland Security in partnership with both the public and private sectors and is intended to protect the US internet infrastructure.
