New malware targets Mac users
Mac users have been warned to watch out for a new online threat that may not only compromise their security but also leave them robbed of their finances.
Macintosh desktop internet security and privacy software firm Intego states that it has discovered a rogue program titled MacGuard1 claiming to offer Mac antivirus software.
However, the programme's claims of being able to perform a series of online security tasks such as search hard drives for malicious objects and eliminating the threat has been called into question.
"The description of this software is merely a clone of a well-known Windows rogue security software tool that has been proven to be malicious," warns Intego.
"The software may be dangerous to Mac OS X, and there is a risk that the company 'selling' this software may be scamming users and some sources suggest that they may be using the credit card numbers they harvest for nefarious purposes".
According to Intego, MacGuard's website claims to be 'owned and operated by Innovagest 2000 SL', which is "known to disseminate a well-known rogue anti-spyware tool for Windows".
