New malware 'hit half a million PCs'
A new piece of dangerous malware is targeting the world's computers and has infected more than half a million computers in just a week, it has been claimed.
Tech Digest has warned anyone using online resources LimeWire and eDonkey that an as yet unnamed malicious program has been uploaded on to many thousands of machines.
It noted that the malware hits the victim with lots of pop-up adverts.
The website stated: "It works by disguising itself as any old piece of media that when opened will ask you to download a codec that is actually a bundle of adware."
British resource Get Safe Online warns that viruses will attempt to spread to other computers, potentially infecting the PCs of family and friends.
Furthermore, such programs can damage a computer and even undertake criminal activity through their victim's machine, it notes.
The advice website adds that the serious consequences which can result from virus attack include identity theft, fraud and a computer becoming slow and unusable.
