New FTP account Trojan discovered
Internet users have been warned about a new Trojan which harvests FTP account data from infected computers.
The malicious code was discovered by Prevx, and the number of computers infected rose from 66,000 last Wednesday to 74,000 two days later.
Jacques Erasmus, director of research at the firm, said the Trojan was very effective at infecting its host and spreading.
In a blog post on Monday, he said: "We rate this infection as critical."
He added that the code uses a cyclical infection technique to modify high-volume websites boosting the number of computers that come into contact with it dramatically.
The Trojan is hidden in a JavaScript code and redirects users to a website offering a testing kit to discover underlying viral infections.
According to Websense, cybercriminals have been exploiting the recent Air France plane crash to spread password-stealing Trojans.
The company warned users to be wary and ensure their anti-virus software is kept up to date.
