New cell launched to target cybercrime
The Chandigarh Police department is to benefit from a newly-created Cyber Crime Investigation Cell.
Formally launched this week, the unit is to be commanded by Punjab governor S F Rodrigues, Express India reported.
The publication noted that the organisation will have a hi-tech portable forensic laboratory to allow it to extract data from hard drives.
As well as combating the online sale of illegal commodities such as wildlife, the cell will clamp down on phishing and unauthorised access to computers.
Spokesman Pardeep Mehra commented: "With sophisticated crime rising by the day, it is important that the police department remains abreast with criminal activities and is linked to an international or national database," the newspaper reported.
Recently, a study conducted by ReadiMinds found that 30 per cent of Indian banks had suffered identity theft over the last 12 months.
It suggested that the online security issue of phishing is a major factor in such theft.
