Network security is underestimated
Businesses and government need to realise the importance of network security, according to new research.
A study by the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) has highlighted several major issues facing online security in the future.
The independent group's Commission on National Security called on the government to get involved in cybersecurity by working more closely with IT professionals.
"Government should facilitate the creation of the cyber equivalent of 'Neighbourhood Watch', by engaging positively with the law-abiding technical community," the report said.
The law-abiding community was to include systems administrators, internet service providers, and white-hat or ethical hackers.
According to the IPPR government should spearhead the creation of a global cybersecurity organisation to give support to the existing European Network and Information Security Agency.
It also called on leaders to support the creation of new internet security and anti-virus software.
According to IT industry expert Sherri Davidoff, installing anti-virus software can cover security holes found in Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol.
