Most websites have security weaknesses, report shows
New data released by website risk management solutions provider WhiteHat Security has revealed that the majority of websites have a internet security flaw and 63 per cent a high, critical or urgent issue that needs fixing.
Social networking websites have been growing in popularity in recent times but their growth poses a danger as 82 per cent of them also have critical flaws that could be exploited.
More than 17,000 vulnerabilities were identified and around 7,000 remain open, the firm stated.
According to Jeremiah Grossman, founder and chief technology officer at WhiteHat Security, online threats may be different in size and risk but their potential to cause damage should not be ignored.
"One of the biggest takeaways from this report is that not all vulnerabilities are created equal, but many are very serious - leaving the door open to exploit sensitive information and cause some serious damage," he said.
Comparison website moneysupermarket.com recently published figures showing that viruses, malware and spyware had led to 12 million people in the UK having their internet security compromised in the past six months.
