More sophisticated spam and malware due this year
US consumers should prepare themselves for a brace of new more targeted spam and more sophisticated malware this year, it has been claimed.
According to the email security firm Softscan, 2008 will see cybercriminals broaden their information gathering activities from the likes of gaming and social networking sites to other online activities such as shopping and paying bills.
This level of information is set to make the spam emails the hackers send appear more official and consequently more likely to convince users of their veracity, said Diego Ambra, chief technology officer at SoftScan.
He told computerbusinessreview.com: "Although social engineering will still be the preferred method to lure people into infecting their computer or giving away password information, the approaches themselves will become much more sophisticated.
"As criminals redouble their efforts to improve response yields and ultimately increase turnover, we expect to see highly targeted spam with content written specifically for the recipient."
Mr Ambra also expects phishers and malware writers to increasingly target sites that include links from third-parties during 2008.
