Modern viruses 'unpleasant but easier to wipe'
Although modern viruses are unpleasant, it is now easier for the average computer user to clean them off their machine, an expert has asserted.
Industry commentator Christopher Null, writing for the Yahoo! technical blog, commented that historic viruses such as Brain and the worm Melissa were less sophisticated but harder to destroy than their modern counterparts.
Additionally, he reminded users of the 2000 virus ILOVEYOU, notable as it was one of the first pieces of malware which tricked the recipient into opening a file and unleashing the program.
Today's PC user "missed the real heyday of computer viruses when anti-virus software wasn't very widely used and virus attacks caused millions of dollars in damages overnight", Mr Null stated.
According to news source the Register, Brain was the first virus to target PCs and was spread through infected floppy discs.
It notes that once viruses took to the internet as the platform of choice, the time taken to spread malware dropped from "days to hours".
