Mobiles being targeted by cybercrooks
Mobile networks and handheld devices are becoming a target for cybercriminals, an expert has warned.
Simeon Coney, head of business development at Adaptive Mobile, made his comments to the BBC, noting that online threats such as viruses had transformed from annoyances to profitable crimes for hi-tech criminals.
It is these cybercrooks who have the technical understanding to make money through developing malware, such as Trojans and handset viruses, for mobile phones, he continued.
"Mobiles offer so many opportunities for extracting value from people," he explained, adding that currently there "are about 400 variants of mobile malware compared to in excess of 700,000 for computers".
Recently, digital agency High Position asserted that in addition to spam, mobiles are being hit with increasing numbers of malicious programs.
It noted that the rise in mobile phone applications such as email and messaging services is making handsets increasingly vulnerable to such online threats.
