Mobile workers warned against Public Wireless networks
Internet users have been warned about the dangers posed by online threats that come with public wireless networks, which are increasingly being made available in public places such as hotels and airports.
In an article about online security, Kurt Marko argues that hopping on to these networks without the requisite internet security measures "makes about as much sense as using a toothbrush you find left in the bathroom".
The article published by Processor.com states that employers should direct more resources towards protecting increasingly mobile employees, who would easily plug into such networks due to their speed and zero costs.
"Public networks vary widely in the attention their operators pay to security, so it's incumbent upon users to understand the potential vulnerabilities and to take precautionary security measures," says the writer.
Internet security traps that lie in these networks include "everything from data sniffing to attacks on exposed server processes" that can lead to the theft of sensitive information.
Last month security firm ScanSafe reported that cyber crooks were attempting to breach networks by bypassing protective software.
