Microsoft says it is not rivalling security vendors
Computer giant Microsoft has moved to dispel rumours in the internet security community that its new free anti-virus suite dubbed Morro will be a rival for industry players.
Share prices of major internet security players received a jolt yesterday (November 19th) when Microsoft revealed that it was doing away with its Live OneCare package in favour of Morro.
However, speaking to Reuters, Amy Barzdukas, senior director of product management for Microsoft's online services and Windows Division said the product to be released next year was not a threat.
"This is really focused on the 50 to 60 per cent [of PC users] who don't have, or won't pay for, anti-virus protection, anti-malware protection," she said in the interview.
According to the executive, Morro will only be equipped with anti-malware software, which is very minimal when compared to standard offerings from security packages.
Most online security software packages feature encryption, firewalls, password protection, parental controls as well as data backup programs among others.
