Many phishers "clueless"
Although phishing scams can appear sophisticated, many criminals behind them are "careless and even clueless", it has been claimed.
Researchers Nitesh Dhanjani and Billy Rios told security news website Dark Reading that while conducting an undercover investigation of the phishing world, they discovered many such cybercriminals fail to protect the data they steal.
In fact, some such criminals choose to share the information with other phishers, sometimes to "gain respect" from their peers.
Furthermore, some cybercriminals have developed phishing software which allows them to steal from the scammers they sell it to, Mr Dhanjani explained.
He told the news resource that, ironically, victims of such scams should hope their attacker is one of the slightly more sophisticated criminals.
"Then at least when your information is stolen it's only going to one person. If a phisher is sloppy, other people can get access to your information, too," he explained.
Mr Rios and Mr Dhanjani are to present their findings in full at Black Hat Conference in Washington DC in February.
This year's meeting will focus on different areas of attack and issues relating to wireless security.
