Man arrested in Japan over virus
An engineering student has been arrested on suspicion of building and distributing a computer virus through the file-sharing programme Winney, it has been reported.
According to the Japan Times, the unnamed student could be the first in the country to be arrested for creating malware.
It noted that the virus he is accused of spreading steals document files from the infected machine and destroys data.
The allegations state that he embedded the malware in a still from an animation and then distributed it online, the publication continued.
He is likely to be charged with violating copyright law, it noted.
However, the newspaper also claimed it is "clear" such law is not sufficient to tackle cybercrime.
"The government should consider separating the Penal Code revision to fight cybercrime from the revision to introduce the crime of conspiracy and expedite its enactment," it urged.
Online resource TechDirt said that it is good officials in Japan are cracking down on malicious software but argued that they should not have to rely on twisting copyright laws in order to do so.
