Malware warning from search engine giant

Malware can be added to a PC without the permission of its owner and lead to chaos and even theft, Google has warned.

The search engine giant's security team has explained that the term malware refers to any program designed to cause damage to a computer or its software.

Internet users can be vulnerable to attack from this malicious software simply by visiting websites, Google employee Panayiotis Mavrommatis explained.

He continued: "It can then slow down your system, send fake emails from your email account, steal sensitive information like credit card numbers or passwords from your computer - and more."

In a previous post on the company blog, Niels Provos, a member of Google's anti-malware team, urged PC users to practice good "computer hygiene" amid concerns that some websites were inadvertently serving up malware to their visitors.

He suggested people install anti-virus software and run the operating system's automatic updates.
