Malware manufacturing 'becomes competitive'

Creating viruses has become a competitive sport, following the launch of a competition which encourages programmers to create malware.

A new contest has been announced which calls for contestants to develop malware designed to hack into protected machines.

Organisers of the competition, the results of which will be announced at the up and coming Defcon conference, claimed there is no intention for the software created to be used to attack regular PCs.

"We are not creating new viruses and modified samples will not be released into the wild, contrary to the belief of some media organisations," they added.

However, a number of security firms which develop anti-virus software have expressed concern that the contest will encourage the development of malware.

Those concerned about the risks of malware may want to consult the US government's OnGuardOnline resource.

It suggests that people who believe their computer is infected consider running anti-virus software to isolate and remove the offending program.
