Malware 'imitates security centre'
Some malware now imitates the security features built into Microsoft's Windows operating system, it has been claimed.
A post on the MSBasic blog notes the prevalence of a kind of malware which causes pop-up messages to appear periodically.
The resource states: "This fake security centre simulates an analysis of the computer which warns us that our system is infected.
"In order to eliminate the malware, we are requested to purchase a certain program."
However, MSBasic advises that this can occur on some websites without the system itself being infected, meaning those who follow the prompt to purchase the specified program "just lose money in a dumb way".
A previous post on the blog noted that phishing attacks are not limited only to trying to imitate banks.
The resource advised that phishing is likely to occur wherever there is the chance to make money - including in relation to massively multiplayer online games or internet advertising programmes.
