Malware fears at Valentine's looms
This Valentine's Day could be hit by a new wave of malware as the hackers behind previous e-card scams ready themselves for a new wave of attacks, it has been reported.
Fiona McGoldrick, writing for developer network IrishDev, has warned web-users not to open anonymous e-cards even if they hope it is from a secret admirer.
The cards could contain a short message and a link inviting the recipient to a host infected with the Nuwar virus, she warned.
By opening the link, users download malware which then targets their address book, spreading the virus.
"The controllers ... are making huge sums of money by using the infected computers to send spam and even install other malware," she warned.
However, online technical news resource Switched suggested attacks at Valentine's Day are less effective than during Christmas or New Year as it is normally celebrated between partners and not by the widespread sending of cards.
This means e-cards will appear more suspicious, it claimed.
