Malware creation hotspots revealed

Africa, India and Central America are the countries likely to become malware hotspots in the near future, according to an expert in the field.

Patrik Runald, security response manager at anti-virus solutions firm F-Secure, suggested these destinations due to the limited job opportunities within these countries.

Indeed, he said that there are a number of socio-economic factors that have an influence on the increasing amount of IT crime across the world.

"The trend [in computer crime] is expected to continue and spread into areas such as Africa, India and Central America," said Mr Runald.

"This is partly due to the limited IT job prospects in these markets. People are developing sophisticated computer skills, but have limited opportunities to profit from them legally."

He also indicated that computer crime has grown considerably in emerging markets such as Brazil, China and the former Soviet nations.

A recent study based on data compiled by CA's global security advisor researchers predicted that large-scale events, such as the US presidential elections and the Beijing Olympics, could suffer online attacks this year.
