Malware and viruses not just for mischief
Online threats such as computer viruses and other malware infecting computers are not just a nuisance or some sort of mischief but could lead to far bigger crimes such as online fraud, it has been argued.
Viruses and other types of malware, adware and spyware pose grave internet security risks but most internet users are not aware of the depth of the danger, according to online security firm Kaspersky Lab.
Most people are just vaguely aware of viruses as a concept and it may take time for proper awareness to get through, said the firm's senior technology consultant David Emms.
"People now are much more familiar with viruses and therefore are aware that they need an anti-virus program," he explained.
"[However] they're not necessarily yet aware of the fact that malicious code like viruses get written not for fun or for mischief or downright sabotage but actually to gather information which could result in you losing money."
Properly updated internet security software and fully functional firewalls are recommended to keep such threats at bay.
