Malaysia beefs up online security as computer spy fears grow
Malaysian authorities have confirmed that they have stepped up their computer security procedures amid fears the Asian nation will be the next victim of the recently-revealed global online 'spy' network.
With China playing down speculation that it is behind the online criminal network, Malaysia's minister of energy, water and communication Datuk Shaziman Mohd Manso revealed that he has yet to see evidence of any such attacks.
"Although we have not received any complaints, we are working closely with Mampu [the country's Management Planning Unit] which is now tightening anti-hacking measures," he told the New Strait Times.
"We are also liaising with Wisma Putra since they have offices worldwide and they may be more vulnerable to such attempts as they use the local systems."
To date, it has been confirmed that computer systems belonging to the Dalai Lama, Iran, Latvia, Indonesia and Barbados have been compromised by the online network, with around a dozen machines a day believed to be coming under its influence.
