'Large increase' in phishing attacks
There has been a 533 per cent increase in the number of phishing attacks against the retail and services sector, it has been claimed.
US brand protection firm MarkMonitor warned that increasingly sophisticated cybercrooks are using social networking sites to harvest personal information.
This information is being used to create highly-targeted attacks, it continued.
Frederick Felman, chief marketing officer for MarkMonitor, commented: "Tracking trends over the course of a year shows that criminals and fraudsters around the world continue to develop new and adaptive ways to take advantage of brands."
There has also been an increase in the number of vishing attacks, in which the criminal uses a telephone component to create a more believable message and target their victim more effectively.
According to the Anti Phishing Working Group, users should always be wary of any emails which urgently solicit personal financial information.
Such criminals often ask for details such as passwords, usernames and credit card information in order to exploit them for financial gain.
