IRS email scam hits Kansas
The Inland Revenue Service (IRS) is warning the public of an email scam that is being circulated online, according to reports.
The email says: "Our records indicate that you are qualified to receive the 2008 Economic Stimulus Refund," online news source Kansas.com notes.
However, if the user submits their details then a cyber criminal receives them and could commit identity theft, it warns.
The hoax was uncovered when a reader of the Wichita Eagle sent a copy of the email into the newspaper, which was then forwarded on to the IRS.
In order to avoid such phishing attacks, users must not open email if they do not know who it is from, the IRS urged.
Furthermore, they must not open any attachments unless they are certain it is safe to do so, it added.
Recently, the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Centre warned the US public of a scam email that claims to be subpoenaing the person it is sent to.
The scam directs the user to click a link to the California federal court but if they do so then a malicious code is downloaded to their computer.
