Indian govt takes online security steps
The Indian government is taking steps to protect its websites from hackers, it has been reported.
According to the Economic Times, the Department of Information Technology has decided to "finally" take action as a result of recent attacks against government pages.
It will also act to create a series of advance warning mechanisms, designed to let vulnerable government departments know when the system is under virus assault, the publication continued.
An official from within the department told the newspaper: "We are in the process of evolving a mechanism to issue advanced warnings and alerts on cyber attacks."
Last year, the Times of India website was hacked, causing it to infect visitors' PCs with a variety of malicious programs.
Before that, the Bank of India's website had to be disabled for a number of days after hackers embedded malware within the homepage.
Using legitimate websites to infect visitors' machines is sometimes known as drive-by downloading.
