Indian and Pakistani hackers in cyber war

Hackers from India and Pakistan are reportedly locked in a battle that has seen government-run websites' internet security compromised, their pages defaced and data deleted from others, reports in Indian press say.

According to the Times of India, India's oil and gas major ONGC and its Pakistani counterpart OGRA have been victims of the cyber warfare, whose origins are steeped in politics.

The online battle was reportedly triggered by an Indian group of hackers referring to themselves as Guards of Hindustan (HMG) in mid November, prompting retaliation from their Pakistani counterparts the Pakistan Cyber Army (PCA).

The newspaper reports that five Indian websites were attacked yesterday by the PCA to avenge the earlier attack on Pakistan's Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority website.

This is not the first time politics has slipped into cyber space in this manner.

During the recent Russia-Georgia conflict, government-run websites belonging to Georgia were subjected to a series of attacks by hackers believed to have been Russian.
