Indian agencies 'bombarded with virus threats'
The number of attacks on Indian government agency websites and systems is on the increase - and a significant proportion of these involve viruses.
So claims the Economic Times, which has reported on data suggesting that 25 per cent of all attacks on government websites in January involved viruses or worms coming under the "malicious code" category.
Almost 90 attacks were reported during January, ranging from phishing attempts which constituted 47 per cent of all attacks, to unauthorised scans coming in at 21 per cent.
Such figures could suggest a growing threat both to organisations and consumers in India in terms of online criminal activity.
The Department for Information Technology stated that it was taking action to address the increasing number of attacks to which it was subject.
An official from the department told the publication: "We have entrusted the National Informatics Centre with this task and the servers of most ministries have been moved to the government body."
Reports in the Economic Times last year suggest that 5,200 Indian websites came under attack from hackers during 2006.
