India cyber crime on the up

New figures show that there has been a leap in the amount of cyber crime in India in recent months.

The country's National Crime Bureau claims that illegal online activity has seen a 50 per cent increase.

It also revealed that the majority of people carrying out cyber crimes were below the age of 30.

Delhi Police now have 100 specially trained officers working directly on catching offenders who commit crimes using the internet.

"There is an increase in cyber crimes and our cyber crime cell is looking into the complaints," Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat told IANS.

"Our special team officers are working with IT experts to keep a tab on it."

According to the report, the most common incidents of crime are cyber pornography, followed by hacking.

It revealed that 217 cases of cyber crime were recorded under the country's IT Act last year compared to 142 in 2006.
