Increased exposure to malware
An increasing number of people now use the internet regularly, meaning they are highly likely to encounter malware such as viruses, it has been claimed.
Computer information resource 100computertips.com has suggested internet users ensure their anti-virus software is up to date and is scanning incoming and outgoing emails as well as software programs.
It warned computer users to be especially careful when opening emailed attachments, particularly from unknown addresses.
"Treat any email attachment as potentially dangerous ... Many computer viruses replicate themselves by reading the contacts from an infected computer," the web resource added.
In the past, the BBC has stated that there are so many online threats targeting home PCs that their users must feel "under siege".
The list of online security tips published by the broadcaster includes the purchase of anti-virus software in order to protect computers from the various forms of malware.
It adds that such security software may seem expensive but that it could be considered cheap compared to the consequences of an individual having their bank details stolen.
