"Ill-minded hackers" perpetrating malware
Although it is a useful and necessary resource, the internet is filled with "ill-minded hackers" and their malicious programs, an expert has asserted.
Industry commentator Arvind Singh made his comments in an article for the LA Chronicle, noting that malware such as viruses and spyware programs make it vital that users protect their machines.
"Spyware protection is impossible without expert and professional help. It is difficult to remove personally the files associated with the spyware," he continued.
Furthermore, a machine infected with such unwanted programs could become considerably slower, causing frustration and inconvenience to the user, Mr Singh added.
USA firm Visa also urges consumers to ensure their machines are protected from online threats such as viruses, spyware and Trojans.
Furthermore, it calls for people to be wary of the risks of phishing scams and to remain vigilant online.
Visa suggests citizens only download software from sites they trust and install a firewall to prevent uninvited users from hacking into their machines.
