Identity theft 'threatens firms and individuals'
One of the many threats affecting businesses and individuals today is that of identity theft and information loss, an expert has warned.
Staples, a supplier of office products, questioned world-renowned information theft expert Frank W Abagnale, whose teenage exploits were the subject of the film Catch Me If You Can on his views of the increasing threat.
Mr Abagnale commented that many identity theft issues could be avoided by using "simple common sense".
"When you look at the time and financial costs incurred by ignoring these safeguarding behaviours, it is staggering," he added.
Staples warned that some individuals may be at risk when they simply open an email from a stranger or click on links which take them to unknown and potentially untrustworthy websites.
Viruses are a "major" problem online, it noted, adding that they can erase hard drives or cause the computer to be hacked into by a criminal.
Mr Abagnale has worked with the FBI for more than three decades and often lectures at its academy.
His firm create fraud prevention programmes which are used by more than 14,000 financial organisations.
