ID theft could rise in recession
Internet users have been warned to watch out for an upsurge in online crime as a result of the recession, which is likely to force some to commit cyber crime, it has been highlighted.
Global internet security solutions provider Unisys has stated that the difficulty in finding work may spur people who would not normally break the law into becoming cyber criminals.
"A new wave of criminals, not traditionally driven to break the law, are coming forward, as opportunities to make money by legal means become fewer," explained global security solutions vice president Neil Fisher.
He went on to state that ID theft would be the likely line that some may follow because it is "a faceless crime" where perpetrators do not have to confront victims "and the risk of getting caught is minimal".
His views come in the wake of the Unisys Security Index, which showed that 72 per cent of UK consumers believe they are at greater risk from ID theft.
